One’s instinct is at first to try and get rid of a discrepancy, but I believe that experience shows such an endeavour to be a mistake. What one ought to do is to magnify a small discrepancy with a view to finding out the explanation.
Sir John William Strutt ( Lord Rayleigh )
The Nobel Prize in Physics 1904
I want to get back again from Chemistry to Physics as soon as I can. The second-rate men seem to know their place so much better.
Sir John William Strutt,
I may say that in my opinion true Science and true Religion neither are nor could be opposed.
Sir John William Strutt,
Sir John William Strutt ( Lord Rayleigh ) The Nobel Prize in Physics 1904
Born: 12 November 1842, Died: 30 June 1919, United Kingdom.
Prize motivation: “for his investigations of the densities of the most important gases and for his discovery of argon in connection with these studies.”
Work
The air around us consists of several different gases, mostly nitrogen gas and oxygen. Lord Rayleigh developed methods for studying the physical properties of gases in the atmosphere.
In 1894 he, along with William Ramsay, succeeded in extracting the previously unknown element, argon, in pure form and in analyzing its properties.
Is it right to probe so deeply into Nature’s secrets?
The question must here be raised whether it will benefit mankind, or whether the knowledge will be harmful.
Pierre Curie
Be less curious about people and more curious about ideas.
Marie Curie
The Nobel Prize in Physics 1903 was divided, one half awarded to Antoine Henri Becquerel “in recognition of the extraordinary services he has rendered by his discovery of spontaneous radioactivity”,
the other half jointly to Pierre Curie and Marie Curie, née Sklodowska “in recognition of the extraordinary services they have rendered by their joint researches on the radiation Phenomena discovered by Henri Becquerel.”
It is important to make a dream of life and a dream reality.
